Simple Steps To An Efficient Gutter System

By | February 11, 2018

Keep your gutter system cleaned and maintained to prevent costly damage to your roof. Some simple steps are all that are needed to keep it in shape so that it effectively deposits water in an area that is away from your home.

Use The Following Items

  • scrub brush
  • water hose
  • bucket
  • hand rake
  • waterproof epoxy
  • caulking gun
  • ladder
  • soapy water
  • cloth
  • putty knife

Remove Debris And Rinse Well

Begin by placing your ladder next to one end of your gutter system. Carry a small, empty bucket and a hand rake up with you. Loosen leaves and dirt with the rake and gather them up with your hand, placing them in the bucket. Once an entire section is empty, move your ladder down and continue the same steps. Once the gutter system is free of debris, use a small bucket of soapy water and a scrub brush to clean any sections that have residue stuck on them. Rinse the entire gutter system off with a garden hose, paying careful attention to the downspout.

Make Repairs To The Gutter System

Thoroughly inspect the gutter system for leaking areas. The best way to do this is by spraying the hose through each section and observing if any of them are leaking. If so, dry off the damaged area with a cloth and apply waterproof epoxy to it. The easiest way to do this is by inserting the tube of epoxy into a caulking gun. Make sure that the tip of the epoxy is facing towards the front of the gun.

Squeeze the trigger and apply a thin line of epoxy over the damaged section. Smooth it out with a putty knife. The epoxy will take a few hours to dry, but will be water resistant in the future, preventing further damage. If damage to some of the gutter pieces is severe, remove them by pulling them away from the adjoining pieces and purchase replacements.

Keep Your Roof And Gutter System Maintained

To prevent problems in the future, it is a good idea to clean your roof and gutter system every couple months. Spraying them both off with a hose is all that is needed. Of course, if large branches are on your roof, removing them right away is a good idea. By being vigilant and taking these simple steps, your roof will remain protected and you will not have to worry about spending money on unnecessary repairs.

If you are unable to clean and maintain your gutters on your own, you can hire a company, like roofing gloucester , that offers these services.
